Threadneedles
Autograph CollectionA Victorian banking hall turned boutique City hideaway
Threadneedles sits at 5 Threadneedle Street, in the heart of London's financial district, inside a bank building from 1856 that now belongs to the Autograph Collection. The bankers have gone, but the grandeur stayed. The old Banking Hall is now The Dome Lounge, the hotel's social centre, and it's a calm spot for a cocktail or a quiet catch-up away from the bustle of the Square Mile. Upstairs, the 74 rooms feel more like a private townhouse than a corporate hotel, with City views, bathrobes and slippers, and plenty of polish without any fuss.
The real star is the stained glass dome above the lounge. It was installed when the building first opened in 1856, and it's still the building's crowning glory. Look up during an afternoon drink and you'll understand why so many guests take a photo first and order second. The historic Grand Room has kept its period features as well, so receptions and dinners here come with a fine sense of occasion.
The location makes getting around easy. Bank and Monument stations are only moments away, the Bank of England Museum is about five minutes on foot, and St Paul's Cathedral is a pleasant 14 minute stroll. If you're driving, note that parking isn't on site. The nearest option is the NCP car park at Vintry Thames Exchange, so it's worth booking ahead. Check in is from 2pm and check out is at 11am, which leaves time for a slow City breakfast before you leave.
